Popular comedian I Go Dye has offered to sponsor a young man's education in Delta state. The celebrity made the decision after a young man interrupted his show and jumped on the stage. It was gathered that the young man who had jumped on the stage while I Go Dye was performing, had expressed his desire to go to school and have a good education. The comedian who was impressed by the young man's determination took to his Instagram page to announce that the young man would be rewarded with a scholarship to any school of his choice.

The chairperson of the zone, Dr Agnes Owolabi, disclosed this during the statutory meeting of principals of unity schools in the Southwest held last week at the Federal Government College, Ijanikin, and Lagos.

A total of 18 principals from the zone participated in the quarterly and rotational meeting.

Owolabi, who is also the principal of the Federal Government Girls’ College, Sagamu, emphasised that effectively securing the schools and keeping both the students and members of staff safe from external aggression was a key priority at the moment.

THE INSTITUTION EXPRESSED ITS GRATITUDE TO THE PRESIDENCY FOR APPROVING THE ISSUANCE OF LICENCE TO THE UNIVERSITY

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been granted an operating license by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) to operate a television station on campus. This was disclosed on Wednesday, May 2, by the vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, during the pre-convocation press conference held at its Senate chambers, otes that Ogundipe also said that 245 students would graduate with First Class honours during the 29th convocation slated for May 8 to 11. He said: “We are keen to redefine campus-based broadcasting with this initiative while giving our students a rewarding experience and grooming an exemplary crop of Mass Communication students. “Our profound gratitude goes to the Presidency for approving the issuance of a television license to the university, making us the first university in Nigeria to have a licensed campus television station. “We thank the presidential media team as well as the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, for their efforts in making this a reality.”...............

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SAID WILL HELP STRENGTHEN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM IN NIGERIA .

The federal government says it has released more than N138 billion in the last three years as matching grant to strengthen basic education system in the country. Earlier, Hamid Bobboyi, executive secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) said lack of data was a major setback in the education sector. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the audit will cover all pupils, students and personnel in both public and private basic education institutions in Nigeria. Adamu said the funds, managed by the Universal Basic Education Commission, were accessed by states and the Federal Capital Territory that also paid their counterpart contributions. He explained that the personnel audit was in line with the provisions of the Universal Basic Education Act 2004, “to help establish reliable education data for planning.  "It is important to note that since its establishment in 1999, the commission has successfully conducted two national personnel audit in the country in 2006 and 2010 respectively focused only on public schools.” The minister said the audit would also establish strong foundation for sound management information system in the basic education sector. He added it would strengthen the current National Educational Management Information System (NEMIS) which serves as a key pillar of the nation’s educational planning process. Earlier, Hamid Bobboyi, executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) said lack of data was a major setback in the education sector. He however said that the audit would help to create a comprehensive and reliable basic education data bank in Nigeria. He noted that the exercise had no connection with auditing financial accounts of schools. Bobboyi listed some specific objectives of the personnel audit to include obtaining reliable data of children of school going age enrolled in basic education schools. Other objectives include obtaining the number and qualification of teaching and non-teaching staff including their personal information and progression in service. He said the exercise would also provide authentic school mapping of all basic education schools in the country as well as address the challenges of inadequate education data. The minister of FCT, Mallam Muhammad Bello assured that the FCT administration would support the commission to ensure smooth conduct of the exercise. Similarly, Halilu Ahmed of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), described the exercise as a quantum leap because of the use of digital technology where information on basic education could be accessed with a click of the button. He said that the database was designed to be updated on regular basis in such a way to accommodate newly established schools or new infrastructure Also, Mahmud Abubakar, Chairman, Governing Board of UBEC, said the role of NASRDA was important to the effective conduct of the exercise. He said that at the end of the exercise, a virile and responsive Geographic Information System (GIS) would be developed to help in planning, monitoring and evaluation of the sub sector. Abdulahi Salifu, Regional Director, UNESCO, congratulated UBEC for taking the lead, saying that the audit would help ascertain the quality and quantity of teaching and non teaching staff. He added that it would also give more information on what needed to be done and improved upon in the system, and identify the number of out-of-school children in the country. Meanwhile,  earlier reported that the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi, had listed education as one of the steps to Nigeria's development and exit from recession. Obi said Nigeria must embark on aggressive savings, diversification of the economy towards manufacturing and investment in developmental education. He said these  steps would help the country in sustaining its growth

THE OSUN INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS) SHUT DOWN ACTIVITIES AT THE OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY (OAU)

They reportedly stormed the institution as early as 7am and sealed the Senate building, the administrative block and the bursary department. The report said the main gate along ‘road seven’ was also shut. The official who led the revenue team, Oladipo Babatunde, as confirming the closure of the institution and threatening not to re-open it until the institution pays its tax. Accordingly   some hostels in the school have been taken over by bedbugs, leaving most of their mattresses infected. An undergraduate of the school identified as Michael Kalis  saying they had to leave their mattresses outside, hoping the infestation will reduce. Oluwatobi also suggested a total fumigation of their hostels, as that would help take care of the bugs permanently.
