Disease outbreak: Queens' college postpones resumption

The resumption of academic activities at Queens' College, Lagos, had been postponed indefinitely, due to the health crisis in the school.

There had been an epidermic outbreak of water borne diseases in the school, which led to the deaths of some students and this had cause panic among the parents.

Two students have been reported dead since the outbreak of the disease, with about 50 students currently on admission in the school's clinic. The outbreak was said to have stated after the students ate spaghetti and drank water in the refectory.

The Lagos State Government as a result has advised the school to shutdown academic activities indefinitely.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Thursday, the state's Comissioner of Health, Jide Idris, sadid the school's resumption should be delayed till appropriate health measures are taken to ensure the safety of the students.

The school, a federal government-owned institution, had been slated to reopen after it midterm break on Sunday March 19.

The Unity School Old Students' Association, USOSA, likewise, on Sunday called for the declaration of a public health emergency at the school. 

The president-general of USOSA, Chidi Odinkalu, said in a statement that pending independent cartification of the school as safe for human activity, it should remain closed.
