The
call to reduce the price of unified tertiary matriculation examination appeared
on the wave of the common movement to make education accessible and affordable.
The cost of UTME registration in 2017 was N7, 500.00. James Faleke (APC, Lagos)
proposed the review of this amount. According to Faleke in our days the number
of universities increased and only a half of applicants were admitted to the
institutions in 2017. Further aware that JAMB as a government agency is not set
up for profit making but to promote the educational development of the young
citizens in pursuit of their professional career. I was alarmed at the
allegation of the huge sum of money missing from the vaults, burning of scratch
cards, lending out money made from sales of application forms, conversion of
proceeds from sales of application forms to loans and Image ’empowerment’ funds
to private individuals and fictitious stories by the officials of the board.
Believes that education, being a pivot upon which relational development of the
nation rests, should be made available to citizens at the barest minimum cost. After
such words, the intention of unified tertiary matriculation examination price
reduction was referred to the committee. We await the final decision on this
issue after two weeks of consideration. We will bring you the latest post UTME
news as soon as the information reaches us.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ABUJA HAVE LAMENTED THEIR POOR LIVING CONDITION
Students
of Veritas University, Abuja, have cried out over the closure of the school by
the management of the institution. Notes that the institution was said to have
been shut down because students had protested unavailability of basic needs
such as water, electricity, accommodation, security, among others. A student of
the institution said that despite paying 530,000 naira as school fees, 20 or
more students occupy a room, adding that the hostels are very dirty and full of
rats, bedbug and tons of mosquitoes. He said: "We use the bush to toilet
because the toilet is not acceptable. The school does not care about its
students and it’s unfair because parents suffer so much to pay this fees - they
even go as far as borrowing and yet the school is treating the students like
animals. "The students were suspended for a week because of a peaceful
protest against maltreatment. The environment is bad for learning. NUC has to
do something about this; the environment is totally not conducive for
learning." The student’s union president, Ijanusi Olawale, said: “We
believe the state is largely occupied by masses with nothing. 500% increment is
too much and highly inhumane. The government is autocratic. They should reverse
the fees if they don’t want touts littering the streets."

BREAKING NEWS………UNIVERSITY OF MAKURDI SHUT DOWN.....
A
group of persons who claim to be students of Benue state University, Makurdi,
on Monday, May 21, shut down academic and non-academic activities on the
school’s two campuses in protest against the hike in their tuition fees. The students went on a protest after the
university management introduced new conditional charges that resulted in an
over 65% hike in tuition fees for new students. The students blocked all the entrances leading
to the university campus along the Makurdi/Gboko federal highway, demanding
that the university management reverse the tuition increase without any delay
to enable the new students carry out their necessary registration. However,
armed security personnel, comprising police, civil defense and DSS were
stationed at the main gates of the university while some of them were seen
chasing the protesting students out of the campus.
Reacting
to the development, the acting registrar of the university, Catherine Terlumun
Bur, said that “some group of miscreants parading themselves as students of the
university, in the early hours of Monday 21st May 2018, took over, locked up
and displaced the security manning the main gate of the university, bringing to
a halt the inflow and outflow of human and vehicular traffic into the
university, including nursery and primary school pupils for reasons yet to be
ascertained.” Terlumun Bur, in a statement, noted that the action was particularly
worrisome in view of the fact that the university was scheduled to commence
accreditation of programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC) from
Monday, May 21, 2018. She stated that the university was yet to conduct
election into the leadership of the Student Union since the expiration of the
tenure of the last executive committee, stating that the university does not
have any student union leadership currently to direct such a protest on campus.
The acting registrar warned the perpetrators to vacate the gate in their own
interest, vowing that the university will “not hesitate to avail itself of
lawful means to deal with the situation.” The workers expressed displeasure
over government's failure to implement the agreement it reached with them
during the strike. The workers said they were also unhappy with the rate
government is giving approvals for the establishment of new universities
instead of resources to be concentrated on raising the standard of existing one.

The
Katsina state government has commenced the screening of 1,356 unemployed youths
to be engaged as teachers under its newly introduced `State-Power’ programme.
Malam Usaini Karaduwa, the special adviser on employment, promotion and
vocational training to the Katsina state governor, disclosed this during the
commencement of the three-day exercise in Daura on Thursday, May 17. He said
the youths were drawn from Daura, Dutsi and Mai'adua local government areas,
adding that the screening was going on simultaneously across the three
senatorial districts of the state. Karaduwa said that degree holders and other
relevant qualifications would be screened for subsequent engagement as
teachers. He added that government was laying more emphasis on those with
B.Ed.,B.Sc., NCE, H.N.D. and N.D.
He
said each of them would receive a stipend of N20,000 per month as salary,
stressing that in the event of any existing vacancy in the civil service; any
of the qualified S-power employee would be engaged. One of the beneficiaries,
Hafsatu Suleiman commended the efforts of the state government for introducing
the programme. She said the programme would reduce the number of unemployed
youths as well as promote security in the state. It was noted that 5,000 youths
would be engaged by the state government as teachers in the S-power programme
for two years. The state government says it is going ahead with the scheme
despite the fact that sustaining it has become a challenge, due to its
financial limitations.

WHAT ARE YOU KNOWN FOR???
NIGERIAN STUDENT STUDYING IN YALE
UNIVERSITY, LOLADE SIYONBOLA NARRATES EXPERIENCE IN THE HANDS ON A WHITE
STUDENT.
A
Nigerian Lolade Siyonbola studying at the Ivy League University has shared discomforting
news of how a race biased student called the police on her. Lolade Siyonbola
who is a post graduate student of African Studies at the university narrated
how she was having a nap at the Yale University's common room when a White
student she identifies as Sarah Braasch called the campus Police to come and
arrest her. She explained that the encounter wasn't the first she has
experienced from her co-student Sarah. She
said that Sarah Braasch, who is studying Philosophy at PhD level, once
called the Police on one of her friends a few months earlier. She said the
friend had got lost in her building during a visit. In her post Lolade
mentioned that Sarah has messed with the wrong person as she vowed to get it
straight with her. She rose up to the racist Sarah Braasch and told her
matter-of-fact, “I deserve to be here. I pay tuition like everybody else.” 34-year-old
Lolade, added that the police asked her for identification which she didn't
provided saying to them, “I’m not going to justify my existence here.” “I
really don’t know if there’s a justification for you actually being in the
building,” she said to the officers, after establishing her enrollment. Lolade
also unlocked her dormitory room door in front of the officers to show she
lived there after they insisted on seeing her ID. “We’re in a Yale building and
we need to make sure that you belong here,” one officer said in the video. The
officers said the encounter lasted longer than expected because Lolade’s name
appeared differently in the school’s database. The news of the racial profiling
suffered by her spread throughout the campus and in reaction the dean of Yale’s
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
TOP 8 FACTORS FOR CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION FOR STUDENTS
TEACHERS
Teachers
are the first people to implement their role in the curriculum for their
students. They usually select what they need to teach to their students and how
it may affect the whole teaching process. Therefore, their curriculum is
provided to be alternative as teachers may decide what they want to teach and
what the really need to teach. Teachers are usually involved in constructing
and implementation of curriculum in Nigeria.
LEARNERS may also influence the curriculum
implementation in Nigeria. If teachers are provided to be the arbiters of the
learning process, but the learners actually hold the key to the idea of
curriculum activity. The official learning process is quite different from the
one that is prescribed by the ideas of country.
RESOURCE Materials and Facilities It’s obvious that no
meaningful teaching process can be provided without resources and facilities.
This factor significantly changes the whole picture of what happens right now.
The Ministry of Education has problems providing necessary resources to the all
educational institutions in Nigeria. In some schools, students have to pay for
their books and even supply their schools with necessary equipment. Therefore,
SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT this factor significantly changes the whole
picture of what happens right now. The Ministry of Education has problems
providing necessary resources to the all educational institutions in Nigeria.
In some schools, students have to pay for their books and even supply their
schools with necessary equipment. Therefore, the implementation of curriculum
is impossible without providing necessary elements for education. Rural areas
especially suffer from the lack of resources.
INTEREST GROUPS the interest group also plays the major role
in the development and implementation of curriculum in Nigeria. Who are these
groups that may have influence on the development of curriculum in our country?
They are usually holders of great financial resources and may influence the
political structure of our country. The curriculum may also be outdated and
their implementation is not necessary and even harmful in some cases. At the same
time, if a school is situated in not the best place on earth then it’s highly
possible that the school may change the whole curriculum to support the
interest of learners. Therefore, the school environment may decide if they need
to follow the curriculum.
CULTURE AND IDEOLOGY Culture and ideology may also change the
implementation of curriculum in schools. Culture differences are present in
different parts of the country and even in the same school. Therefore, culture
may provide various interesting decisions in implementing curriculum in
Nigeria. INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION
Implementation of curriculum is not possible
without supervisory functions provided by the government.
ASSESSMENT Examination changes the way you think about
curriculum. It provides new standards to meet and all educational institutions
will have an opportunity to meet these standards or change them accordingly.
The implementation of curriculum is possible in many ways. Nevertheless, it’s
advised to consider every possible factor that can affect curriculum implementation
in order to develop effective curriculum for educatio
JAMB HAS MADE N8.5 BILLION FORM THE SALES OF ADMISSION FORMS IN 2018
The
Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) generated a princely
N8.453billion from the sales of forms to applicants seeking admission into
tertiary institutions in Nigeria in 2018, a top official of the Board on Friday, May 11, that the revenue came from
payments made by 1,602,762 candidates who registered for the Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) held across the country…
"Each
of the total 1,798,438 UTME and direct entry candidates paid N5, 500 for the
forms out of which N4, 700 goes to JAMB’s coffers while N800 is remitted to
banks and suppliers of reading texts to applicants. The number of applicants
was lower this year following reforms in the application process which
effectively blocked multiple registrations by candidates. About N1.8million
UTME and DE candidates sought tertiary admissions in 2017", the official
said. It is not exactly clear how much the Board will remit to the federal
government this year after settling computer-based test centers, and paying
other service providers and exam officials. In 2017, the examination body paid
in N7.8 billion to the government. It was gathered that the remittance for 2018
will be close to that amount. “As you know, change of course and universities
are ongoing. It is only after we are done with the entire admission process for
the year that we will be able to determine the total revenue for the year”, the
official said that since the arrival of Is-haq Oloyede, a professor, as
registrar, JAMB had ceased to request funding from the federal government for
its capital and recurrent expenditures. “The registrar is now asking the
government to allow JAMB handles the payment of salaries and allowances to its
personnel. He believes that will enable the board to improve the working
condition of its staff by paying them better. “Since he is blocking loopholes
for stealing and eradicating corruption, the registrar believes it is important
that staff are better paid from the revenues they help make every year. That
way, they will not be tempted to revert to corrupt acts.” The official said
Oloyede has also asked the government to allow JAMB spend N2billion from its
revenue this year, and another N2billion next year, to upgrade its corporate
headquarters in Abuja and improve its state offices across the country. “But as
you know, there has to be approval and everything has to be appropriated before
any spending can be made,” he said. When contacted, Oloyede confirmed JAMB has
made “more than N8billion” from sales of forms but declined further details. He
directed further enquiries on the matter to the spokesperson of the Board,
Fabian Benjamin.
